England held onto their titles in the European Junior U15 & U17 Squash Championships in the Czech Republic – but the favourites were taken the full distance by second seeds France in the U17 final at Hamrsport in Prague.

England reached the final of the U17 championship after 3/0 wins over Scotland and Belgium, while France also recorded convincing 3/0 victories over Portugal and Germany en-route to their third final meeting with England in the past four years.

But France took an immediate lead when Damien Volland defeated England number one Ollie Holland in straight games.  Emily Whitlock, the 16-year-old British U17 champion who boasts two ESF Junior circuit U19 titles this season, brought the top seeds back into contention with a 13-11, 11-8, 11-8 win over France's Melissa Alves.

The final match was a tense affair in which England's Matthew Sidaway recovered from a game down to take a 2/1 lead over France's second string boy Alexandre Cogno.

But the 16-year-old Frenchman levelled the match after winning the fourth before 15-year-old Sidaway regained the upper hand to march through to an individual 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-1 win and a 2/1 title triumph for his country.

It was the fourth U17 title in a row for England – and the fourth U15 crown in succession after a comprehensive 3/0 win over Hungary in the other final.  But it was a notable success for Hungary in reaching the final for the first time in their history from a position of 17th seeds after a previous best finish of 6th place in 2007.

But Richie Fallows put England firmly in control in the tie after beating Lenard Puski 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 – followed by an 11-4, 11-6, 11-5 win by Eleanor Lake over Csenge Kiss-Mate which ensured England's fourth title triumph in succession.

In the best-of-three 'dead rubber', Hamish Falconer despatched bt Gergo Papp Nandor 11-4, 11-4 to continue England's undefeated run through the championship.
