Unseeded Orla Noom ensured home interest in the semi-finals of the Women's Dutch Open after securing a surprise win over seventh seed Latasha Khan in the opening round of the $25,300 WISPA World Tour squash event at Victoria Squash in the Dutch city of Rotterdam.

The 25-year-old from Hoofddorp, ranked 42 in the world, defeated Khan, the world No25 from the USA, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7 - and will now meet compatriot Natalie Grinham for a place in the last four.

"We play a lot in training and I can count on one hand the games I've taken off her, so to actually win in this tournament is great," Noom told the official event website www.dutchopensquash.nl later. "I don't usually play well in Holland so I was just hoping I didn't freeze or mess it up, and thankfully I didn't!"

Third seed Grinham is competing in her first international event on home soil since the birth of her first son Kieran in May. The 32-year-old former world No2 survived a good workout against 16-year-old English qualifier Emily Whitlock, winning 11-9, 11-3, 12-10.

Dutch interest is alive and well in the top half of the draw where UK-based Vanessa Atkinson beat rising Egyptian star Heba El Torky, a 19-year-old from Alexandria, 11-5, 11-5, 11-7.

Fourth seed Atkinson, the 12-time Dutch national champion, now lines up against Sarah Kippax, the fifth seed from England who took out German qualifier Sina Wall 11-4, 7-11, 11-4, 11-5.
