Mexico's Alfredo Avila became the surprise winner of the Betty F Griffin Florida State Open after beating second seed Andrew Wagih Shoukry in a five-game final of the PSA World Tour Super Satellite squash event at Life Time Athletic Club in Boca Raton, USA.

Sixth seed Avila made his breakthrough in the previous round when he upset event favourite Gilly Lane, the world No57 from Philadelphia, in four games.

But Egyptian Wagih Shoukry also had a tough semi, fighting back from 2/0 down to overcome third-seeded Mexican Erik Tepos Valtierra.

And the 20-year-old world No70 from Cairo twice led in the final - and was within touching distance of the title after the fourth game went to a tie-break.

But 19-year-old Avila, ranked 138 in the world, maintained his focus to force a fifth game decider before closing out the match 3-11, 11-7, 8-11, 13-11, 11-6 to claim his first title on the PSA Tour.
