Amstelpark Squash vs Afbouwcombinatie/Squash Zwolle

AMSTERDAM, 7 Februari 2006 - The Amstelpark Dames improved upon their first performance against Squash Zwolle, this time winning 4-1.

#1 Annelize Naude v. Daniele Schumann 3-0 (9-1, 9-4, 9-1)
#2 Aisling Blake v. Dagmar Vermeulen 1-3 (4-9, 9-2, 8-10, 7-9)
#3 Ellie Pierce v. Lisa Kho 3-1 (9-1, 9-4, 9-1)
#4 Nicole v/ d Boogaard v. Natasha Buisman 3-0 (9-4, 9-6, 10-9)

Nicole van den Boogaard came out against Natasha Buisman playing her favorite style of squash – hard hitting, confident, aggressive squash. Amstelpark’s warm courts added to the pace of Nicole’s forehand drives, never letting Natasha get settled on the court. Amstelpark won the first game 9-4.
The first game is typically the best game for Nicole who prefers to play a fast pace using her tremendous racquet skills and confidence to direct the ball low on the front wall forcing her opponents to react quickly.
In the second game, Buisman seemed more alert and better prepared for Nicole’s aggressive game, reacting better and making fewer errors. Nicole kept the pressure on Buisman, kept the ball just above the tin and won the game 9-6.
Nicole was starting to physically feel the effects of her hard hitting after the second game but used her experience to play clever squash by hitting high (lobs) balls from the front of the court that landed nicely in the back corners, forcing Natasha back in the court giving Nicole time to recover to the T. In the end, Nicole’s desire to win the third game and have the match be over, gave her the extra incentive to push herself through the tie-breaker points (2) and win the game 10-9 and the match 3-0.

The #2 players for the night were Amstelpark’s Aisling Blake and Squash Zwolle’s club pro and team captain, Dagmar Vermeulen. The last time these two played in Zwolle, Aisling won 3-0. This time, it was Dagmar’s night to play well.
Aisling struggled to find her length in this match, chosing to hit low and hard giving Dagmar the opportunity to use her retrieving skills to keep the ball in play. Dagmar wisely deflected the shorter length from Aisling and played very effective “moving boasts” which put Aisling under pressure resulting in loose balls from the front corners that Dagmar confidently converted into winning rallies. Dagmar won the first game 9-4.
Aisling found her length in the second game forcing Dagmar to work out of the back corners and won the game 9-2.
The third game went to Dagmar 10-8 giving her the (mental) upper hand going into the 4th game.
Dagmar again, used her strong retrieval skills, keeping the ball in play against Aisling making her ‘win” most rallies. Frustration continued to plague Aisling’s play, resulting in crucial errors that gave Dagmar the 4th game 9-7 and the match to Zwolle.

Amstelpark’s “Rockstar” and #1 player for the night Annelize Naude, took to the court against Zwolle’s #1 player Daniele Schumann. Annelize got down to business in this match winning comfortably 9-1, 9-4, 9-1 to put Amstelpark up 2-1 in the match.

Amstelpark’s experienced Ellie Pierce played against Lisa Kho in the final match of the evening with Pierce looking to give Holland’s top junior player a better match than their first meeting in Zwolle where Lisa won convincingly 3-1.
Pierce knew that her experience and discipline was needed to contain the mentally tough and tactically clever Lisa Kho. Ellie did this well in the first game playing tight lengths and commanding the T, giving Lisa very few opportunities to play the ball to the front of the court resulting in a 9-1 win for Amstelpark.

The second game saw a determined Lisa return to the court and increase the tempo of play with more driving lengths. Pierce reacted with a higher tempo as well which took its physical toll as the game progressed. Ellie started playing too many cross courts and boasts from the back court which resulted in Lisa taking the volley/drop opportunity to put Ellie under further physical pressure. Lisa had several game balls at 8-6 but Pierce continued to fight and made it to 8-8 for the tie-breaker….The score stayed at 8-8 for almost 10 minutes with both players refusing to fold. A few too many trips to the front of the court for Pierce started to take its toll on the 39 year old and Lisa won the game 10-8.

In the 3rd game Ellie slowed the pace down and kept hitting the ball straight and tight along the walls keeping a frustrated Lisa in the back of the court. Too many errors from Lisa resulted in a quick 9-1 game for Ellie.

Ellie continued to command the T in the 4th and final game trying to contain Lisa in the back of the court. Discipline that comes from experience served Ellie well in this game getting up 7-4 on Lisa who hit the tin too often giving Ellie the points she needed to win the game 9-4 and the match 3-1.

Amstelpark Dames gained 4 valuable points to remain in first place overall in the Dames Eredivisie.

The Amstelpark Squash team is playing well and looking forward to their next ‘home’ match on 21 February against the current 3rd place team Squash Almere.
