It was a brave performance by the England team, all of whom were making their first appearances in the prestigious European U19 competition. First in action was Suzie Pierrepont, the newly-crowned women's European individual champion, who soon found herself 2/1 down to Netherlands opponent Orla Noom, a beaten quarter-finalist in the individual event. The 18-year-old from Sussex maintained her composure, however, to win 9-4 6-9 2-9 9-1 9-3 in 46 minutes to put England ahead. The next match was a repeat of the men's individual final, with England's Laurence Delasaux looking to avenge his five-game defeat to Dutchman Dylan Bennett. At 2/0 up, the 17-year-old from Hull's plans seemed on course, but Bennett fought back and after 62 gruelling and nail-biting minutes secured a 6-9 6-9 9-7 9-0 9-7 victory to level the tie. The fate of the title was now in the hands of Dutchman Tom Hoevenaars, and Chris Simpson, the 16-year-old British U17 champion from Guernsey who lost in the second round of the individual event. Playing in his first ever 'live' rubber, Simpson impressively dismissed his opponent 9-7 9-0 9-2 in 40 minutes to clinch the title for England in their 20th successive final. "It was a fantastic final with everybody in the team playing their hearts out," said England's co-manager and coach Annette Pilling. "The fact that none of our squad had ever played in this event before speaks volumes for their strength and determination - and it's great to know that all but one of our squad will also be available for us next year, with Tom Richards and Chris Simpson eligible for a further two years. This year's has been one of the best events I've been involved with - with every member of our squad playing a significant part," Pilling added. Fourth seeds Wales beat France 2/1 in the play-off for third place, while third-seeded hosts Germany avenged their earlier defeat by Belgium to beat the sixth seeds 2/1 to win fifth place.
