Upsets Galore In Dutch Open

Local heroes Tommy Berden and Laurens Anjema led a mass of upsets in the Valid Dutch Squash Open in Maastricht to reach unexpected places in the semi-finals.

Anjema, a qualifier, stemmed a fight back by top seed Simon Parke to beat the Englishman 15-9 15-4 7-15 13-15 15-10 in the quarter-finals to earn a clash with another England international James Willstrop, the No7 seed who defeated compatriot Stacey Ross 15-9 8-15 15-4 15-9.

Unseeded Tommy Berden, the reigning Dutch national champion, took out second-seeded Welshman Alex Gough 13-15 10-15 15-6 15-7 15-6 in the first round, then upset Italy's sixth seed Davide Bianchetti 15-12 15-13 15-8 in the quarter-finals.

Malaysia's unseeded Nicol David claimed the biggest scalp in the women's event with a 9-2 9-6 9-10 9-4 victory over England's No2 seed Cassie Jackman, the world No4. 

In the top half of the draw, another unseeded player took out two seeds to reach the last four.  Jenny Duncalf made her breakthrough in the first round, beating third-seeded compatriot Tania Bailey in five games, then was made to fight back from 0/2 down to win another five-gamer when she beat New Zealand's sixth seed Shelley Kitchen 4-9 8-10 9-5 10-8 9-6.
