Power Down In Doha

Canada's world No4 Jonathon Power has been admitted to a hospital in Doha after breaking his finger in a clash with opponent Nick Matthew in Sunday's first round of the Qatar Squash Classic.

The match was the last of the evening on the all-glass showcourt at the Khalifa Squash Complex in Doha.  Power, the fifth seed, took the opening game, but the unseeded Englishman caught up to claim the second.  At 5-8 down in the third, Power collided with Matthew and fell to the floor, injuring his left hand.

Referee Wendy Danzey ruled it a "contributory accidental injury" and agreed that the match could be rescheduled on Monday, alongside further first round matches due to be played today.

However, at 8.00am local time this morning (Monday), Power was admitted to a local hospital for surgery on the little finger of his left hand - and duly conceded the match to Matthew.

The injury throws into doubt whether Power, who won the World Open title on the same Doha court in 1998, will now be able to compete in the 2003 event which gets underway in Lahore, Pakistan, in just over two weeks.
