Hong Kong qualifier Ho Ka Po led the upsets on the first day of main draw action in the Bailian New Era Mall China Squash Open, the men's and women's tour event in its second year at the Bailian New Era Shopping Mall in Shanghai.

It was a mighty performance by 15-year-old Ho Ka Po in her first appearance in the main draw of a WISPA World Tour event.  The inexperienced teenager despatched England's eighth seed Jenna Gates 11-5, 11-9, 11-3 and will now face Australia's Melody Francis, the No3 seed, for a place in the semi-finals of the $8,800 women's championship.

Australia's unseeded Maggy Marshall also scored a notable win, beating Japan's fourth seed Chinatsu Matsui 9-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4.

Unseeded Dane Kristian Frost Olesen pulled off the biggest upset in the first round of the men's $11,250 PSA World Tour event.  The 20-year-old from Odense beat Germany's No6 seed Jens Schoor 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 and will now face Australia's second seed Ryan Cuskelly.

There was further English disappointment in the men's first round when eighth seed James Snell went down 3-11, 11-8, 11-6, 6-11, 12-10 to unseeded Indian Siddharth Suchde.

The 24-year-old from Mumbai will now take on Australia's Matthew Karwalski in the quarter-finals.
