Lucie Fialova avenged her recent loss to England's Victoria Lust by beating the third seed in the final of the $6,800 Women's McWil Dunlop Polish Open to win her maiden WISPA World Tour squash title at the Squash4You club in Krakow.
It was in December’s final of the Austrian Open that Lust, the world No53, beat Fialova – ranked just two places lower – to win her first Tour trophy.
In the match in Poland's second largest city, Lust started by taking the fight to her opponent, never fearing to try for a winner, while covering ripostes as Fialova, a year the elder at 21, also went short regularly.
But then the English girl lost her way in the second, was denied a decision in the third at nine all that she thought would take her to game ball, which instead went the way of her opponent, who converted at the second attempt to win
With Lust’s consistency gone, Fialova raced to a 5-11, 15-13, 11-9, 11-6 victory to take her first WISPA Tour title in front of a packed gallery.
The 21-year-old fourth seed from Prague paid tribute to the Squash4You organisers who had staged an event in a way that befitted a much larger championship, saying how well all the players had been looked after.
"Last time I lost to Vicky 3/0 - but hoped to do better this time without expecting to win," said Fialova. "It’s my first title and it is very special to me."
Lust commented: "Lucie played well. She found a good length and a strong boast - and I lost my way. I made too many errors and couldn’t construct rallies. I’m disappointed. That’s life - that’s squash!" said the 20-year-old from Cheltenham.
It was the first WISPA event in Poland and very much the first at the seven-court centre, which only opened in the days leading up to the event!
Squash4You director Przemek Debecki was delighted with the outcome: "Squash will now be more popular in Krakow. The media and advertising mean that many people will start thinking about squash and playing. This is a big advance so the event has been a very big success for us."
