Willstrop, 19, from Pontefract in Yorkshire, needed five games to remove his predecessor Karim Darwish, the eleventh-seeded 2000 world junior champion from Egypt, 6-15 15-13 15-9 10-15 15-7. It the teenager's third victory over world top twenty-ranked players in little more than a week, following wins over Scotland's Martin Heath and England's Nick Taylor - ranked 10 and 19 in the world - in the British National Championships. Willstrop now goes on to face compatriot Peter Nicol, the world No1 and top seed, in their second meeting in eight days. Nicol, who beat the youngster on his way to winning the British title, defeated Egypt's Omar Elborolossy 15-9 15-4 15-7. French qualifier Gregory Gaultier, a former European junior champion, also claimed an unexpected place in the second round after defeating tenth-seeded Scot Martin Heath 15-11 15-13 15-8. The 20-year-old world No27 from Aix-en-Provence will now face local hero Jonathon Power, the defending champion from Canada, who was taken to four games by compatriot Graham Ryding before winning 15-12 15-13 11-15 15-8. A major upset looked in sight when Finnish qualifier Olli Tuominen opened up a two-game lead over David Palmer, the third seed from Australia competing in his first PSA Tour event since lifting the World Open crown in Belgium in December. The 26-year-old from New South Wales ultimately reasserted his authority to clinch a 10-15 12-15 15-13 15-7 15-9 victory. In the final qualifying round of the Arader & O'Rourke Women's Open, newly-crowned French National champion Isabelle Stoehr pulled off a shock 9-3 9-4 3-9 9-7 win over Scotland's world No16 Pamela Nimmo. Stoehr's reward is a first round clash with England's third seed Linda Charman.
