The first day of qualifying for the Sky Open in Egypt, the third PSA Super Series 2010 squash event of the year, produced a series of notable upsets at the Sky Petrosport Club in Cairo.

Egyptian teenager Ali Farag perhaps caused the biggest, reaching more than 130 ranking positions above him to overcome rising Swiss star Nicolas Mueller, the world No36 from Zurich, 12-10, 15-13, 3-11, 11-9 in 48 minutes.

The 18-year-old from Cairo, who celebrated a career-high world No167 ranking last month, now goes on to face US number two Gilly Lane for a place in the main draw of the $150,000 PSA World Tour event in its third year in Cairo.

Lane, the world No48 from Philadelphia, despatched Egyptian Omar Abdel Meguid 11-7, 11-4, 11-9 in just 27 minutes.

But Lane will not be joined by US number one Julian Illingworth in the qualifying finals after the world No35 from New York crashed out 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-1, 11-8 to lower-ranked Dutchman Dylan Bennett in a 71-minute marathon.

There was further teenage Egyptian success when Cairo-based 18-year-old Karim Abdel Gawad outmanoeuvred former Egyptian Amr Swelim, the world No43 from Italy expected to reach the main draw, 11-4, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9 in 78 minutes.

Gawad will now meet Joe Lee, the 20-year-old world No76 who pulled off his first ever win over fellow Englishman Chris Simpson, outlasting the world No49 11-9, 9-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6 in a 92-minute battle.

Another domestic duel produced a shock outcome when 20-year-old Kamran Khan defeated fellow Malaysian Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan for the first time, beating the higher-ranked 24-year-old from KL 11-8, 5-11, 15-13, 4-11, 12-10 in 91 minutes.

Khan, son of the Pakistan legend Jansher Khan, now takes on England's Tom Richards in a bid to claim his first ever appearance in the main draw of a Super Series event.
