Vini Vanquishes Walsh In Brasilia Open

Brazilian qualifier Vinicius Costa caused a major upset in the first round of the Brasilia Open Squash Championship when he defeated fourth seed Duncan Walsh in straight games in Brazil's capital city.

'Vini', the three-times Brazilian junior national champion and reigning Brazilian No5 player, beat the Englishman 11-4 11-8 11-5 in 36 minutes to earn a quarter-final clash with compatriot Saverio Christovam, the eighth seed.

"Duncan couldn't handle the power and the youth of Vini," said event spokesman Murilo Mori.  "The weather was so hot and ball was bouncing too much.  We are in winter, but the temperature was 27° Celsius."

The late withdrawal of Pakistani players Wakeel Khan and Waseem Shad opened the way for two local 'lucky losers', Marcelo Isaias and Andre Sa, but both went down in straight games - to Brazilian Luciano Barbosa and fifth-seeded Canadian Sabir Butt, respectively.

Third-seeded Brazilian Rafael F Alarcon took just 23 minutes to defeat qualifier and fellow countryman Rogerio Silvestre 11-1 11-2 11-3, and now faces unseeded Jorge Gutierrez in the quarter-finals.

"This will be a classic clash between Brazil and Argentina," added Mori. "Rafael is the Brazilian number one, and Jorge the Argentinian number one and three-times Pan American champion.  Sadly, only one will survive to the semi finals!"
