Teran Toppled In Mexican Opener

Local star Samantha Teran narrowly failed to pull off a significant upset on the opening day of action in the Women's Sports World Mexican Open Squash Championship in Mexico City.

The unseeded Mexican No1, who was laid low after a serious knee injury last year, extended Egypt's Engy Kheirallah to four games, but eventually went down to the eighth seed 9-5 9-1 4-9 10-9.

Kheirallah now faces Scotland's fourth seed Pamela Nimmo, who cruised to a 9-1 9-0 9-2 win over Australia's US-based Melissa Martin.

Vanessa Atkinson, the Dutch No1 who is seeded to win her third successive WISPA title this year at the event in Mexico City, brushed aside Canadian qualifier Katie Patrick, winning 9-1 9-1 9-0 to set up a quarter-final clash with five-times US champion Latasha Khan.
