History Repeated In Barrington/Zaman Thriller

Two of the greatest names in squash battled it out for a place in the US Open in Boston - and also claimed the closest clash to date under the PSA's recently-introduced 11-point scoring system.

However, a generation after Barrington v Zaman encounters would signify a bill-topping match in the seventies between the six-times British Open champion Jonah Barrington and Pakistan's three-times World Open runner-up Qamar Zaman, this battle featured Jonah's son Joey Barrington and Qamar's nephew Shahid Zaman.

With tie-breaks required to settle four of the five games, Barrington junior defeated Zaman, ranked one place higher in the PSA world list, 11-10 (2-0), 11-10 (4-2), 10-11 (1-3), 3-11, 11-10 (2-0).

The 24-year-old from Somerset now faces Australian Dan Jenson for a place in the main draw of the event which will be staged for the third successive year at the prestigious Boston Symphony Hall.

Another Englishman was also making his bid to repeat history:  Yorkshireman Simon Parke famously won the title in 1999 after beating both Peter Nicol and Jonathon Power in successive rounds and leapt to No4 in the world as a result.

Now fighting back from a series of injuries, 32-year-old Parke is one step away from another first round appearance after beating US National champion Preston Quick 11-7 11-5 11-8 in the first qualifying round.  His next opponent is Australian Paul Price, who beat another American Dylan Patterson 11-5 11-5 11-3
