Qualifiers Quash Seeds In Berkshire Open

Three qualifiers forced their way into the last eight of the Berkshire Squash Open, a new US PSA Tour event in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Englishman Daryl Selby took four games to upset Egypt's eighth seed Karim Yehia.  His 11-2 10-11 11-6 11-5 victory takes the Essex 21-year-old into a quarter-final clash with top seed Borja Golan, the Spaniard who claimed the Brazil Open title earlier in the month.

In the last match of the night, Irish qualifier Niall Rooney despatched Canada's No7 seed Shawn De Lierre 11-4 3-11 11-4 11-3 to set up a meeting with the event's second seed Laurens Jan Anjema.

After an ill-tempered qualifying final clash in which England's US-based John Russell beat Canadian Patrick Bedore, the two were paired up for the second time in 24 hours when Bedore won the 'lucky loser' slot against Russell on the late withdrawal of fifth seed John Rooney.

Harmony between the two players, however, did not improve.  Event spokesman Chris Tom reported:  "Although Bedore initially seemed to have his emotions in check today, he began to unravel when up 9-5.  After being denied two straight let calls, Bedore yelled at the referee who awarded Russell a conduct point to tie the game at 9.

"After Russell closed out the game 11-9, Bedore continue to berate the referee and unleashed a series of profanities in front of the crowd.  Deeming his behaviour unacceptable, the tournament organisers disqualified Bedore and gave Russell an abbreviated win," concluded Tom.

Russell now meets fellow Englishman Bradley Ball, the third seed, for a place in the last four.
