Nicol David Survives Comeback Clash
Malaysia's Nicol David confidently marked her return to the WISPA World Tour
after a ten-month break when she beat Mexican No1 Samantha Teran in the first
round of the Bright Lights Women's Las Vegas Squash Open in the USA.
David, the 19-year-old world junior champion from Penang, decided to take a
rest from Tour after competing in last May's Seattle Open in the USA, though
returned briefly to lead Malaysia in the World Team Championships in Denmark
in October.
The former world No16, now outside the world top 30 after her long period of
inactivity, defeated qualifier Teran 9-5 9-4 9-7 to earn a re-match with
Dutch No1 Vanessa Atkinson, the second seed, her quarter-final conqueror at
last year's event. David is now based in the Netherlands where she is
working with Australia's Dutch national coach Liz Irving.
The biggest upset on the opening day of action in Las Vegas was created by
New Zealand's unseeded Lara Petera who beat fourth seed Annelize Naude 9-5
10-9 9-2.
Canada's Melanie Jans became the only qualifier to earn a place in the
quarter-finals when she overcame fifth seed Latasha Khan after the
newly-crowned US champion conceded the match with an ankle injury with score
standing at 9-6 10-9 in the Canadian's favour.
