It is more than 30 months since the Dublin-born 33-year-old claimed his last international title - since when Ryan, a former world No7, has plunged to 90 in the current world rankings. Seeded eight in Doha, Ryan made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals when he twice had to come from behind to topple top-seeded Egyptian Mohammed Essam Hafiz. This 63-minute battle was overshadowed by his semi-final encounter against England's rising star Joey Barrington, the seventh-seeded son of Ireland's most legendary squash giant Jonah Barrington. Again, the tall Irishman had to fight back from a game down - and after 99 gruelling minutes finally quashed his higher-seeded opponent 12-15 15-12 15-12 13-15 15-11 to take his unexpected place in the final. By comparison, England's fifth seed Alex Stait had an easier semi-final run, upsetting Australia's No2 seed Marcus Smith in straight games to reach his second final in Qatar this year. Seven-times Irish champion Ryan, now based in Bury in north west England, celebrated his final glory in appropriate style - despatching Stait, a decade younger, in his only straight games win of the tournament! In just 40 minutes, Ryan clinched a morale-boosting 15-7 15-9 15-13 victory, and his third successive upset in the event, to mark the sixth PSA Tour title of his career.
