Omnipotent Omneya Graduates At Vassar College

Egyptian teenager Omneya Abdel Kawy came of age in the final of the $20,000 Vassar College of 1932 Women's Squash Open in the USA when she beat tour veteran Fiona Geaves in five games to claim her maiden title on the WISPA World Tour in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The 18-year-old world junior champion from Cairo - who earlier this month won her fourth successive British Junior U19 Open trophy - twice had to come from behind before defeating the 36-year-old world No9 from Gloucester 1-9 9-7 7-9 9-7 9-6.

It was a riveting final which left the packed crowd at Vassar College guessing the eventual outcome as the two women played with great resilience, neither showing signs of giving in until the bitter end.

While the two women were well-matched, fourth seed Kawy had the upper hand in the latter half of the game with her agility and swiftness.  Her patience and composure were a bonus. Second-seeded Geaves, on the other hand, showed signs frustration, which may have interfered with her game.

"All in all, it was an exciting match from start to finish and an excellent ending to one of the best Class of 1932 tournaments to date," said tournament organiser Jane Parker.

The Egyptian reached the final after upsetting England's top seed Vicky Botwright in a four-game semi-final.
