Women's Professional Squash To Be Showcased In Mexico City

Luis Alvarez SagueƱo, the renowned Mexican soccer star and co-owner of Sports World (see attached picture), has announced that Mexico's largest fitness club chain has embarked on a three-year plan with the Women's International Squash Players' Association (WISPA) that is intended to lead to the WISPA all-glass court being used in Mexico City for the forthcoming Sports World Mexican Open.

"Working with WISPA, we are starting by bringing the 2004 Sports World Mexican Open to our centre, but plan to develop the championship onto a glass court soon," said Marisol Ancona, director of marketing for the Mexican fitness club chain.

Squash, a sport ideally suited for the world's third largest metropolis, is experiencing a re-birth in Mexico with new squash clubs and fitness clubs that offer squash opening up at a rapid pace.  "We want to continue being a part of this movement as most of our clubs offer squash and we are committed to include squash courts as part of our fitness club expansion plans," added Marisol.

The women's championship will run from 31st August to 5th September, with the home challenge being led by Sports World's sponsored WISPA player Samantha Teran, who will be returning to the WISPA circuit after nearly one year.

Samantha had experienced a serious knee injury last year that derailed her steady climb in the rankings.  Now on the comeback trail, Samantha won the individual gold medal as well as the team silver medal in the Pan American Championships, held in Mexico earlier this month.

The venue for this year's event is Sports World - Del Valle, one of the firm's fitness clubs that is in a centrally-located business district of the nation's capital.
